10 things you probably didn’t know about correctional officers

  1. Starting salary is $14.07 per hour or more than $29,000 annually to start.
  2. End of probation salary is $14.90 per hour (includes 30 cent shift differential) or nearly $31,000 annually.
  3. Correctional Officers receive $21,000 in state benefits (over $50,000 in total compensation).
  4. Correctional Officers receive seven weeks of initial training with on- the-job training and coaching by veteran staff.
  5. Correctional Officer receive paid overtime or additional time off and have opportunities to advance their careers in the Missouri Department of Corrections.
  6. Benefits include 12 paid holidays, 15-21 days of paid vacation a year and 15 days of sick leave each year.
  7. Correctional Officers are eligible to receive college credit for completing basic training. (12-18 hours from several colleges)
  8. Correctional Officers work a straight 8-hour shift with a meal and uniforms provided.
  9. Correctional Officers are critical to helping offenders become productive members of society through positive role modeling and good communication skills to correct and counter criminal thinking.

Corrections Officer I Hiring Process

After completing your application for Corrections Officer, if you are qualified
for this position, you will be scheduled for the next available examination date.
The Corrections Officer I position requires that you complete two phases of
testing:

Phase I: Corrections Officer I Video Examination – Approximately 2 hours.
Your test results will be sent via e-mail normally within 3-4 days.You must
score at least 70 percent to be considered for Phase II of this process.This minimal
score is subject to change based upon the needs of the department.

Phase II: Pre-employment Screening Process – Approximately 3 hours.
This process consists of an interview and a physical agility test.After completion
of this phase, a thorough background investigation will be conducted.The
background investigation can take up to four weeks.

If you successfully complete both phases, you will be considered for
employment in the county or counties you selected on your application.
