Applying for Positions: The Register & Merit Reform

Message to Staff: Nov. 8, 2018

Dear Corrections Family:

While talking to staff in Boonville Correctional Center recently, a member of the personnel team mentioned that some employees are still struggling with our transition from the merit system. Specifically, she said, they are uncertain about the process of applying for new positions and promotions.

We want to help remove any barriers you might face in starting, changing or advancing your career in corrections. So let’s try to clear up some of the confusion.

The most important thing to remember is that you don’t have to be on a register to get a job. You can choose to be added to a register to be considered for future opportunities, but it isn’t required. If you are on a register, you don’t have to wait for confirmation before applying.

To guide you through the application process, the Office of Personnel has provided answers to frequently asked questions.

  1. How do I learn about vacancies with the department?

Employees can view internal announcements in the Job Opportunities folder on the shared network at: K:\Job Opportunity Announcements
Announcements also can be found at the following sites:
  1. How do I apply for department vacancies?

For most vacancies, you will need to complete a Department of Corrections Application for Employment, available at: https://doc.mo.gov/sites/doc/files/2018-05/931-1419.pdf
Most positions require the applications be sent to the Office of Personnel, Central Hiring Unit. Applications can be sent to one of the following:
E-mail: doc.employment@doc.mo.gov
OR
Fax: 573-526-7666
OR
Mail:
Department of Corrections - Office of Personnel
Hiring Unit 2729 Plaza Drive
Jefferson City, Missouri 65102
Applicants must include copies of transcripts if claiming college degrees or coursework. DD 214 or NGB 22 forms must be provided if you are claiming Veterans Preference.
Please review the instructions carefully on each job opportunity announcement, as some may have alternative application methods.
  1. Do I need to be on a “register” to be considered for a position?

No. It is never necessary for you to be on a register to be interviewed or considered for a position with the department.
You may also apply through EASe (https://www.ease.mo.gov/) if you wish to be added to a register for future opportunities. Please note that applicants are removed from the register after 90 days, and applicants may apply only when registers are opened.
An EASe application does not substitute for the required Application for Employment

We want to make sure you are able to seize all opportunities available for you to advance in your career. If you have any questions about job applications, please contact the Office of Personnel at 573-526-6484.

Thank you for all you do to help improve lives and make our communities safer. Happy Veterans Day, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Anne L. Precythe
Director
