Big News
Thank you all so much for making this past weekend such a success for Special Olympics Missouri and our DOC team! Between our two Super Plungers and the Davis Dawgs team we raised $17,656 for Special Olympics Missouri. This number will go up as several members had more cash and checks to turn in that day. This is simply AMAZING and could not have been done without each of you and the backing of your Administration. Not only is this HUGE for SOMO but also our department. This is a very positive story about staff giving back to our local community. Also, the money you raised is a donation from your institution you work at which will help you meet your $1,000 goal in order to be in the Torch Run Club which ensures your name is on the back of the Torch Run shirts.
To all of our new Tipton plungers, THANK YOU! You all stepped up and showed up in full force. It was great meeting you and connecting with some that I had the privilege of working with this past year while there helping custody out. I spoke to a few of you afterwards as well and it appears you enjoyed yourself as well. For those of you who didn't already know it Tom Salzman will be joining me and Super Plunging next year so he's going to need you help getting him to that next level of fundraising as it's $2,500 to do that. We as a team give him $1,250 from our Cornhole Tournament which will be held on Saturday September 26, 2020. (More information will follow closer to the date)
So here is the breakdown for each institution who jumped with us.
ACC
23 Plungers, 1 Super Plunger, and 2 Pee Wee Plungers raised $11,128
TCC
14 Plungers raised $2,753
BCC
2 Plungers and 1 Super Plunger raised $3,700
SCCC
1 Plunger raised $75
THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. Special Olympics Missouri is something I am very passionate about for many reasons but none of this would be possible without each of you, your administration, family and friends. I hope that everybody enjoyed the day and made some positive memories. I look forward to seeing and hearing from each of you in the years to come!

The Veterans Program has been making hats for various causes during the last few months. I am pleased to announce that we have donated the following:
- 50 hats and approx. 100 bottles of hygiene items to Welcome Home in Columbia, an organization that provides housing and support for homeless and at-risk veterans
- 20 hats to various donation racks in the local area
- 174 hats to the Mexico Veterans home in Mexico, MO
- 88 women's' and children's' hats that are being donated today that we are going to donate to CASA (Citizens Against Spouse Abuse), a domestic violence and rape crisis shelter in Sedalia.
That's a total 332 hats and 100 bottles of hygiene items that have gone to these great causes and we plan to keep making hats till the yarn runs out. However the yarn is starting to run low so I would be extremely thankful if anybody wishes to donate more. The offenders have put in over 1000 man hours making these hats. We couldn't have accomplished this without the generous donations of yarn we've received from staff members. I want to thank every one of you that made this possible. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to make these donations happen. I really like to think we made life just a little better for some people in a rough spot.
Restorative Justice were also busy making wooden boxes and flags to be delivered to the Veteran’s home. All items were hand made by the offenders.

Last year CO I Jerry Summers was diagnosed with cancer. He was receiving treatment at the Goldschmidt Cancer Center in Jefferson City. During the Festival of Trees, he asked for staff to help him decorate a tree in his name. The tree raised over $700.00 to help patients with their treatments. Sadly, he did not win his cancer battle and passed shortly after. In honor of him, present and past staff at ACC decorated a tree again this year. Prior to his passing, he chose the theme of Missouri woodland creatures. ACC’s Restorative Justice program donated ornaments and a bear rocking chair to go with the theme.
In honor of former COI Jerry Summers a tree was once again decorated and donated at the Goldschmidt Cancer Center in his honor. We began this last year while Jerry was receiving treatments. He chose the theme of Missouri woodland animals for this year’s theme. Staff donated ornaments and ACC RJ offenders made ornaments and a bear rocking chair for donations. These trees are auctioned to raise funds for others who are receiving treatment.
This year his tree was purchased by a lady whose mother is on her 8th round of cancer . There are a lot of other family members who are also dealing with cancer within this family. The lady’s husband works with wood so all of the handmade wooden ornaments were special to them. The lady is going to surprise her husband with the tree on their Anniversary.
The tree and bear rocking chair sold for $650.00.
Thank you to everyone who keeps Jerry in your thoughts and allows his legacy of always giving and thinking of others to live on.

On Oct. 3, 2019 CCM II Justin Murray was distributing legal mail to an offender. It was at this time that CCM II Murray observed anomalies in the paper work. Subsequently, he recovered dangerous contraband, which was concealed between the pages. His attention to detail ensured that this substance did not make it into the offender’s possession and ensured that it could not be distributed among the offender population.

Gia the Diva passes away
ACC’s house dog Gia passed away Friday afternoon on September 20, 2019. She lived a full life to the age of nine years old, until bone cancer took her from us. She arrived at Algoa in 2011 and instantly made her presence known. She was a smart dog, who flew through her obedience training. She also learned, it was a suggestion, not a requirement. She became the “Diva” of Algoa and she knew it. She spent her days hanging out in the maintenance and laundry areas of the prison. When she wasn’t scarfing left overs there, she was grabbing sandwiches off of desks and rummaging through trash cans in the Admin building. Occasionally, she would lay long enough to have her nails painted and wear her finest jewelry. Her favorite past time was finding your newly washed and pressed clothes and slobbering all over them.
Gia was truly a loved dog by staff at ACC. Everyone was always slipping her treats or some kind of left overs. Any time a hair was out of place or she didn’t act as they expected her to, a phone call would be made to find out what was wrong and what was being done about it. Her presence made everyone smile and could pick you up when it was a bad day. Everyone really loved her and she will be surely missed. She was one of a kind who touched all our hearts. We love you Gia!

The ACC welding class seems to be a big hit. In the month of June, 6 people have graduated with no less than six welding certificates and safety certificates. If these guys are looking to make a good living and change their life style, this class will help them greatly. The discipline and concentration you have to have to be able to finish the book work and the welding, teaches them time management and how to look ahead of yourself. The sense of accomplishment for these guys is the greatest thing to watch happen. So keep sending me the guys you know that will do good and I will keep putting out good welders

The Veteran Program at ACC recently painted stones that were placed on the headstones of veterans, in remembrance of those who have passed on before us. Offender veterans worked hard, cleaning and painting various stones with different images and "thank you’s."The stones were then gathered by a staff member who visited several cemeteries on Memorial Day, where they left these stones as a small token of appreciation.

The Veterans in the Algoa Veterans Program recently celebrated Armed Forces Day by having a team-building event. This event consisted of the members of the "veteran community" at ACC donating canteen items in which they prepared a 2-foot by 6-foot "homemade pizza." This pizza was large enough to serve all members of the veteran program. Additionally, the Food Service department assisted with the celebration by providing cupcakes and coffee for the event.
